Shrink the habit with the two-minute rule
The hardest part of most habits is starting, not finishing. Clear's two-minute rule says to scale any new habit down until it takes two minutes or less: 'read before bed' becomes 'read one page', and 'run three miles' becomes 'put on my running shoes'.
This can feel silly, but the goal is not the result of those two minutes. The goal is to master showing up. Once a habit is established you can expand it naturally, and the tiny version works as a gateway to the bigger one on days when you would otherwise skip it.
Try this: pick a habit you keep avoiding and write its two-minute version today.
